Your favourite Marvel movie of all time!

Rampant Democracy! Red letters
It's time to get my Claudia Winkleman hat on because YOU the public have demanded I do a poll to discover the greatest Marvel based movie of all time.

When I say, "You," I mean Southfolkman - but 100% of one person's good enough for me.

As we all know, Marvel heroes have been on a roll lately, with the likes of Thor, Iron Man and the Avengers wiping the floor with all box-office rivals.

Of course, we can't ignore the newest Spider-Man movie, which has been merrily sending flocks of visitors to this very blog all week.

But we also shouldn't neglect the older movies that paved the way for such success. Who could forget the Blade movies? Or even earlier triumphs like Howard the Duck, Matt Salinger's Captain America or Roger Corman's legendary Fantastic Four? And was I really the only one who enjoyed David Hasselhoff's Nick Fury?

I believe I've said before on this blog that Spider-Man 2's my favourite super-hero movie of all time and, although I enjoyed the likes of Iron Man and the first couple of X-Men movies, I have yet to change that viewpoint.

Anyway, nominate your favourite Marvel-based movie and, as always, in a couple of days from now, I'll put it all together in a poll.

And at last the world can decide; just what is the greatest Marvel  movie of them all.

  1. Tricky one. My current top three is probably

    3)X-Men First Class
    2)Thor
    1)Captain America.

I'd place Avengers joint third if it were possible. Amazing Spider-Man is probably fourth!

  2. The Amazing Spider-Man (1977)!

Only a TV movie and lame in many ways. But the wall crawling scenes were terrific, as was the fight against three bo wielding thugs.

The series that followed wasn't as good, but this was the only Marvel movie that I got to see when I was actually a kid, and that counts for a lot.

  3. I ve not seen the new Avengers movie yet so can't add that (obviously) but my favourites might not be what most folk vote for but here goes:

    3: X-Men First Class
    2: Blade 2
    1: Incedible Hulk

    (Spidey 2 would be 4th)

    I'll get my coat! McScotty

  5. X-Men 2 is by far the best Marvel movie. The only question is what comes in second place!

Superman II is excellent but that's DC of course. I would still like to nominate it for a "best DC movie poll". And this naturally leads to a subsequent DC vs. Marvel poll. (Admit you this planned all along Steve!)

So for nomination #2 I'm going for Dino De Laurentis' Conan The Barbarian (1982). By Crom, does it qualify as a Marvel movie though?

I say thee yes as this was big news in Marvel-dom at the time and Roy Thomas was involved in the sequel!

Nom #3 and I'm going for X-Men First Class (strange as I'm not a huge X-Men fan).

  6. Of the older stuff, I'd have to go with the original Punisher film, circa 1989. Also, although I've never seen it, the 1978 made-for-telly version of Dr Strange has always gotten fine reviews from the majority of film critics.

I'd have to agree with Steve: the television film version of Nick Fury was quite enjoyable, too.

I think my favorite take on Spider-Man is still Dan Poole's 1992 fan flick, The Green Goblin's Last Stand. Poole definitely understood the personalities and ongoing plot dynamics of the original comics better than any of the other directors. Poole's Green Goblin made the one from the 2002 film look like a goofy under-researched joke. For those who haven't seen it, there are two or three places one can watch it online.

  7. Thanks for all your suggestions. The poll's now up, so nominations are now closed. :)

  8. Here. I voted for Captain America as my favourite since, to me, it seems most true to the source material while being entertaining in its own right.
So how come it gets zero per cent? Bear in mind I was never any good at Maths.

  9. Dougie, I don't have a clue why it got zero per cent. Sadly, I have no control over the poll's inner workings. I shall however take your vote into account when I announce the winner.
