What is that vile fiend I see through my window?

It's snow!

But is this a temporary abomination or is more of it on the way?

I've no idea.

But  perhaps that is good news, for there's nothing like uncertainty to warm the blood.

And uncertainty is what we have aplenty, as we're blessed by the return of the feature whose destiny none can know.

It's the one in which the first person to comment gets to decide just what the subject for debate shall be. Therefore, whatever it is you wish to state, enquire or query, type it below and we'll see just where that process takes us.

  2. Rewind TV's the latest neat thing for me. I've just watched a double bill of Sapphire & Steel! On Saturday, Rewind TV has Monkey, & also Bust, starring Paul Nicholas. A few weeks ago Dick Turpin was broadcast, too. Now, Fantasy Island & Policewoman are being trailed. Not so good, perhaps - but still worth a watch!

    1. Police woman? That was Angie Dickinson wasn't it? Definitely worth a look, Phillip!
      Fantasy Island... not so much.

  3. Thanks for the topic, Anon. I've recently signed up to Bluesky, having finally given up on Twitter.

And I've, this week, discovered the existence of mint-flavoured Chocolate Oranges. Granted, the existence of mint-flavoured Chocolate Oranges makes no sense but it works and that's what matters.

  4. Nice topic! Always keeps the mind limber, learning and discovering new things. I've recently been indulging in a fairly new channel on tv (available by antenna, or on some streaming platforms- we watch on Friendly TV): MeTVToons! Have been enjoying Underdog, Bullwinkle, Looney Tunes, Freakazoid and Popeye, just for starters.
Have been reading the Bhagavad Gita on the recommendation of my oldest son. Fascinating. There is so much out there that I've never explored. But now is a good time to start that exploration; I'm preparing to retire in a couple months, and with the madness that has infected this country for the next four years, I'm seeking anything to help maintain my sanity (such as it is). More comics, more books, more music, more walks in the woods...
Oh, and Steve- your mint chocolate oranges sound most tempting...

  5. In a big fan of early ambient music (the more organic stuff from the 70s, not the ‘dance tracks with the drums muted’ stuff from the early 90s).
So there’s a lot of crossover with New Age music from the same period, which I’ve also come to love.

I recently discovered Sound Of The Dawn’s broadcasts on NTS Radio, and the tracklists from those have been a rabbit hole of obscure stuff that’s often being sold on Bandcamp by the original artists for peanuts, so a lot of new ear candy from that process.

And I just finished reading the last of the series of books I set myself the goal to get through this year: The Dark Is Rising sequence by Susan Cooper. I never read them as a child and they keep cropping up in discussions of the sort of stuff I like. I really enjoyed them.

I did the same with Patricia Highsmith’s Ripley books. I’d read some of her short stories last year and was knocked out, so thought it was time to get to know Tom Ripley on the page. Which oddly coincided with the mixed-bag Netflix adaptation, which I was slightly conflicted about.

  6. I finally got around to connecting my phone to my car via CarPlay. I listen to a lot of podcasts and it makes it easier to navigate. I haven’t run anyone over yet, which is a bonus.

  7. Sean - Yes, Angie Dickinson! I remember my mother watching Policewoman, when I was little. I don't, however, remember much about the show. I'll try the first episode, to see if it triggers any memories.

Red - My brother's an Indiaphile, and I think a Bhagavad Gita copy he donated, is somewhere around the house. As regards the philosophical attitude to the great battle, as opposed to Arjuna's initial reaction...it's thought provoking. Nevertheless...it could be used to rationalize war.

Matthew - Yeah, I've read the Dark is Rising!

    Anon - Charlie, I presume?

  9. Good morning everyone! Charlie here.

    Don’t laugh or cringe…

I was prompted to ask the question because my fiancé and I moved into a new abode and it comes equipped with a bidet!

The bidet is afixed to the toilet; it is not a separate entity like in Europe. It has temperature control, velocity, control, pulsing options, and directional controls!!!

This is the greatest thing ever invented as far as Charlie is concerned!!!

I had had one of those very basic $100 bidet attachments that were advertised during the recent Olympics and they are OK. But this thing is in a category all onto itself! I did not know life could be so wonderful!

  10. What also is extremely intriguing is that this new bidet has a remote control!

Charlie already knows, in advance, that during the Christmas holidays after reading some of your UK Dennis the Menace xmas annuals (1960s, natch!] the inevitable trickster within him is going to make a cameo!

Cold water, high velocity, high pulse, and as for the direction… we shall see! Depends on how long Charlie wants to live in the dog house… or live, actually!

  11. Charlie- excellent! Word is that a bidet is more effective in it's purpose than our usual...method...

Phillip- I've not gotten through the Gita yet, and haven't yet encounted the content you mention. But what I've read so far has given me much food for thought...

  12. I recently discovered that Costa now sells instant cappuccino and latte in a jar and Kenco sells the same in a can (all are available in Tesco). I've known about instant cappuccino and latte in boxed sachets for years but the introduction of a jar/can is a big improvement as there's no more fiddling about with sachets.

  13. RED - once you start using a BIDET, you’ll never feel as clean using the traditional method!

And truly, the $100 models you can buy on Amazon are worth it. That said, the water is going to be the same temperature as that feeding your tank. You would have to buy a more expensive model to have the water heated.

Also, just for what it’s worth, having had French wife for 30 years and travel there dozens of times for several weeks at a time, they typically have a separate bidet independent of the normal toilet.

And, they frequently would use that to wash children’s feet and what not. It wasn’t strictly for what we imagine it for: female hygiene.

And As we can see, it has morphed into a tool for hygiene for anyone using a toilet in the sitting position, lol

  14. Not exactly ‘discovered’ but I’ve recently been making an effort to catch up on some classic films that I’m almost embarrassed to admit I’ve never seen. This month is ‘Noirvember’ on The Criterion Channel, meaning they’re running a ton of Films Noir. So far, HIGH SIERRA and GILDA are the two most famous movies that I can now scratch off my Movie Bucket List.

  15. b.t. - As regards Film Noir, I'm always intending to watch 'Touch of Evil' - yet, whenever it's on, I always end up missing it!
