The Marvel Lucky Bag - May 1986.

Cinemas.

What places of magic they be.

Why, within them, you can experience a veritable smorgasbord of experiences you couldn't possibly get at home.

And the non-domestic smorgasbord presented to us in May 1986 included the release of such morsels as Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life Is Calling, No Retreat, No Surrender, Short Circuit, Top Gun, Crawlspace, Poltergeist II, Saving Grace and Blue City.

I must confess I've not heard of most of those films and have only seen Short Circuit and Poltergeist II. I shall, therefore, feel compelled to vote for Poltergeist II as my Movie of the Month.

I suspect others may disagree with me.

Marvel Graphic Novel #21 - Marada the She-Wolf

A brand new graphic novel enters our life when Marada the She-Wolf experiences the Chris Claremont and John Bolton created thriller in which something or other happens.

But wait.

What's this?

This is made up of stories that originally appeared in 1982's Epic Illustrated?

But, surely, that makes this a trade paperback? Not a graphic novel?

Regardless, the Grand Comics Database informs me the Marada series was conceived as a bunch of Red Sonja tales but had to be modified when Marvel lost the license to use the character.

Masters of the Universe #1, Marvel Comics

However, no one's going to care about that.

We're all too busy reading the sensational new comic that's hit our local spinner racks, as He-Man and the Masters of the Universe get their very own comic and Prince Adam demonstrates he does indeed have the power!

However, I know nothing of this opening issue, other than that its contents are titled The Coming of Hordak!

I shall, therefore, assume it deals with Hordak, and his arrival.

Shockingly, as far as I can ascertain, this book will only last for thirteen issues.

The Thing #35, Ms Marvel

And He-Man's not the only one making a Marvel debut, this month.

So is the all-new Ms Marvel when Sharon Ventura's transformed into the second incarnation of the heroine.

Alpha Flight Annual #1

Alpha Flight have had their own monthly mag and, now, they bag their first annual, only to find their mansion possessed by the spirit of someone called Gilded Lily who, with the help of Diablo, is after a physical body to inhabit.

And that can only mean one thing.

That she kidnaps Aurora, for exactly that purpose!

Micronauts #20

But what drama greets us now?

After 20 issues, the latest Micronauts comic hits its final issue!

Does this mean we must abandon all hope of ever getting the Micronauts/He-Man crossover for which we were all so desperately longing?

That would appear to be the case.

As for what happens in this one, I have few clues, other than that it's called Worldhome! and delivered by the minds and fingers of Peter Gillis and Kelley Jones.

The New Mutants #39

Arthur Adams and Bill Sienkiewicz produce a striking cover when Wolfsbane, Cypher, Magik, Karma, Cannonball and Magma join the Hellions.

Meanwhile, Magneto learns about Empath's attack on Tom and Sharon and decides to bring the team home.

A decision that causes Emma Frost to call the police on him.

Which seems a strange decision. Are the police really likely to be able to stop Magneto doing anything?

Also, she's never really struck me as being a, "Calling the police," kind of woman.

Balder the Brave #4

I know little of Balder's latest adventure, other than that he rescues Karnilla - and discovers he's been chosen as ruler of Asgard, as seen in Thor's comic, this month.

And, as our hero gets killed in that book, it's perhaps no shock that this proves to be the last appearance of his own mini-series.

  1. In 'No Retreat, No Surrender!' the action sequences seemed absolutely brilliant, to me, aged 15. Re-watching it, as an adult, the film's incredibly low budget, is very much apparent - even the dubbing/voices seem odd. The action scenes, nevertheless, still stand up, pretty well. I watched 'Top Gun', too ( being an aviation geek, it was a terrific film - but I remembering it coming out later than 'NRNS!' ) Short Circuit's been on tv, many times.

We didn’t get Poltergeist II in the UK until October. I remember our 2-screener showing Aliens and P2 at the same time then.

I like it. It’s not a good film, really, but there are good things in it: the cast are still charming, the VFX are generally good and there’s another great Jerry Goldsmith soundtrack.

It also has two key scenes that are so powerful and hideous that they’re textbook ‘how to do this right’ examples for me. When the evil preacher tries to talk his way into the house, and the HR Giger-designed vomit creature. Ugh.

I’ve never seen Top Gun! I tried a couple of times as a teen but last about 15 minutes. I’d really like to see Jo-Jo Dancer though - it got a restoration recently.

Didn’t have any of those comics except possibly New Mutants. Might have bailed by that point though.

Has anyone seen the trailer for the new He-Man movie? You don’t need to. Just imagine in your head what a thundering, cheap-CGI-looking movie would look like and you’ve nailed it.

  3. If Starmer quits do UK readers have a favourite candidate to replace him?

  4. Call Charlie crazy but after scouring “Mikes Amazing World” Chalie digs Marvel Tales 187 “Would You Believe… KRAVEN THE HUNTER!” most of all. Great cover!

Yep… even in the past I was stuck in the past!

  5. FWIW (Red might really dig this) MIKES has a drop down tab called “Galleries” and dropping down there is a section on “Saturday Morning Cartoons” which shows all the “house ads “that appeared in the comic books for ABC NBC and CBS starting in 1966 through the early 90s.

    Pretty cool memories there!

UK Gents - Did you have something similar every year where the cartoon lineup for the coming year was published? It was kind of a big deal in the United States. I remember a local department store in Gary Indiana having the BANANA SPLITD on hand to kick off the new season in September around 1968.

  7. I didn’t buy any of these comics. Not one. Not when they originally went on sale, or as back issues. So I’m completely ignorant of them.

Well — except I did read all the Marada episodes as they were published in EPIC, and I vaguely remember them. Never got the Graphic Novel/Collection/Whatever It Is tho.

I saw TOP GUN in the cinema, thought it was okay-ish. I might have seen POLTERGEIST II, but if so, I remember almost nothing about it except for the Creepy Old Guy.

  8. No, Charlie - cartoon ads aren't in my memory. Then again, only having 3 channels, our attention didn't really need drawing to one particular station. Autumn season had new shows, which were trailed - but not cartoons. We had Banana Splits, and other American cartoons, too!

Colin - Favourite politician is an oxymoron!

  9. Charlie Joe:
Neal Adams illustrated one of those double-page ads, featuring the SHAZAM/ISIS hour and the “original” live-action GHOST BUSTERS show with Forrest Tucker and Larry Storch, among others.

IIRC, all three networks often had half-hour specials promoting their new Saturday Morning line-ups on the Friday night before the new seasons debuted. They kind of all blur together in my memory, but for some reason I distinctly remember seeing previews for HOT WHEELS and FUNKY PHANTOM.

  10. I haven't seen any of those films, Steve, not even 'Top Gun'.
But I have seen 'Rita, Sue And Bob Too' which was also released this month. Not the best work by director Alan Clarke imo, but all the same an interesting look at 'Thatcher's Britain with her knickers down' (as the original promotional material put it).
Somewhat surprised to see you neglecting yet another film set in Yorkshire...

I don't know about that New Mutants cover. Arthur Adams and Bill Sienkiewicz are an odd combo. Still, what's not to like about a lady in sexy underwear? Clearly Marvel knew how to sell a comic to their readers!

As to the value of calling the cops on Magneto. It would seem they wouldn't be that useful, and he could easily sort them out... but aren't we in the post-trial Good Magneto era? I expect as part of being rehabilitated or whatever, he'd 'do the right thing' and hold back quite a bit when reacting to law enforcement.

Btw, iirc the account of Balder's death in Thor #367 was greatly exaggerated...

  11. Colin, I doubt Starmer is going to resign, but seeing as you asked, my preferred replacement for him is... Ed Miliband!
Mainly because I would love to see the reaction of the British press to 'Red Ed' being installed as prime minister. You've got to laugh.

  13. I think Starmer will be forced to agree to step down at some point in the year or by early 2027. I don't really know enough about Labour to pick a successor but I'm not to keen on Streeting. Someone remotely competent would be nice as the the UK gov hasn't had anyone like that in years.

    1. Not to defend Sir Keir - who is obviously useless - but are even the Labour party stupid enough to try and replace him with Wes Streeting?
I mean, Wes @#*&ing Streeting of all people. What would be the point of that? The guy who very nearly lost a safe seat to an unknown (outside of Ilford) Independent candidate at the last election...

    2. Its looking like that's what's going to happen later this week. Turkeys voting for Christmas and all that Sean.

  14. Radio 4 news has just said that Wes Streeting will resign as Health Secretary tomorrow and launch a leadership challenge!

Sean, apparently Labour did quite well in Ilford at the local elections so the possibility of Streeting losing his seat has receded.

  15. Charlie, we British kids (and Sean) had three kinds of entertainment on offer...

    1) Our own home-grown variety produced by the BBC and their rival ITV
    2) American cartoons
    3) European children's shows dubbed into English

    ReplyDelete
  16. 4) Some Australian kids TV too

  17. The two young actresses in 'Rita, Sue & Bob Too' both ended up in Coronation Street a couple of years later.

  18. And some Japanese shows as well Colin ( Marine Boy, Gigantor , Battle of the Planets etc)

  20. Oops, I forgot about them, Paul - Battle Of The Planets was fantastic!

And does 'Monkey' count as a kids show?

  21. Love me some ASTRO BOY, GIGANTOR, and TOBOR THE 8th MAN for Japanese cartoons in CH’s youth!

Eventually the big kahoona SPEED RACER showed up in the early 1970s once Chicago started having more local channels (not to be confused with ABC CBS and NBC which were the big 3 national broadcasters since the 1930s).

I do have DVD box sets of Speed, Gigantor, and Tobor (and Underdog). Cant wait for my grand kids to get a bit older and do a trip down nostalgia lane! For now, Rachel has only granted permission to watch THOMAS THE TANK ENGINE, lol. I need to get a box set narrated by RINGO!

Apparently, Ringo only narrated the first series.

    2. No kidding?! Well I’ll check out ebay. What surprised me is that there is a second production of Thomas the TANK ENGINE that is all cartoon, not the really entertaining stop-motion like the original. It disappoints.

  22. FWIW - The first National League baseball game played in the United States (there was also an American League) was played 150 years ago today between the Chicago White Stockings who eventually became the Chicago Cubs (they did not become the Chicago White Sox) and the Cincinnati Red Stockings who became the Cincinnati Reds. Per usual between the Cubs and Reds… Cubs won 6-0! ;)

(Red - you nom de guerre is not because of your affection towards the Cincinnati Reds, is it?) .

  23. Charlie Joe:
We watched a lot of THOMAS videos with our daughter when she was little. Ringo was surprisingly good as the narrator of the first season and then George Carlin narrated the next few seasons — he was very good too. I never bothered to watch any of the later animated versions. Can’t imagine they have any of the charm as the earlier “moving model” (can’t really call them “stop motion”) versions of the series.
