November 3rd, 1976 - Marvel UK, 50 years ago this week.

All eyes, of late, have been on the elections in the United States and what they might mean for the safety of the world.

However, as Colin Jones recently pointed out on this very site; 50 years ago, this week, all eyes were on another president when Jimmy Carter narrowly defeated Gerald Ford to become the Deep South's first candidate to attain the post since the Civil War.

Marvel UK, Captain Britain #4, the Hurricane

Only two weeks after we saw Spidey fight that French felon the Cyclone, the UK gets to see its very own hero tackling the Hurricane. Clearly, back then, there was a trend for super-villains to be blustery.

And it all happens when the windbag chooses Thames University as his battleground, attracting the attention of its most super-powered student Brian Braddock.

Following that, the FF's strip sees the Thing on a destructive rampage across New York.

Clearly, the situation needs to be calmed down and Reed Richards knows just how to do that.

He brings in Bruce Banner.

Because, as we all know, there's no one better at calming a situation than Bruce Banner.

Elsewhere, Nick Fury asks Captain America to investigate a mysterious group of men secretly gathering at the Statue of Liberty!

Marvel UK, Planet of the Apes #107

In the latest instalment of the melodrama that spans the gap between Conquest and Battle, Caesar wins his duel with Aldo and thus is a future of harmony between ape and mankind guaranteed.

Following that, a monster called Man-Thing, a man called Zeke and a dog called Dawg are in the Everglades, battling with possessed alligators.

And there's yet more trouble for Ka-Zar when Tongah goes foaming-at-the-mouth mad and attacks him, straight after trying to single-handedly beat up a tyrannosaurus.

When it comes to Marvel's adaptation of the first Apes movie, Taylor and his simian chums find themselves in a mysterious cave that contains secrets pertinent to the history of apekind.

Mighty World of Marvel #214, Hulk vs Mole Man

That cover tells me we're about to get the tale in which the Hulk tackles the Mole Man and his hordes, in an attempt to restore sight to a blind girl. I'm going to venture that it's the first Hulk story to be narrated entirely in the first person.

Next, Luke Cage's new status as a hero for hire on the streets of Harlem leads to conflict with crime boss Diamondback.

But what's this? Can that crime boss secretly be his former friend Willis Stryker?

Conan's still having trouble with a giant shadow that likes to kill everyone. Against a foe like that, I'm suspecting he may need the help of a giant golden scorpion.

And A Life On The Line sees Daredevil and the Black Panther investigate - and attempt to stop - a gang that's been recruiting disadvantaged young people.

Super Spider-Man with the Super-Heroes #195, the Scorpion

Spidey has more headaches than ever when the Jackal offers the Scorpion a chance for revenge against the hero.

This leads the villain to a hospital.

And this leads to the anthropomorphic arthropod being forced to apologise to Aunt May for frightening her.

Thor, meanwhile, is still trying to put an end to Loki's rule in Asgard.

And I do believe Iron Man continues to battle a security guard granted extra powers by a Lucifer determined to get back into our world.

The Invaders, on the other hand, are still trying to foil the U-Man's plot to kill Winston Churchill, with the Sub-Mariner feeling particularly motivated to do so.

And Spider-Man encounters a Vision suffering mysterious seizures. Trying to find the source of the problem leads the pair to the Puppet Master who now has control of an alien robot called the Monstroid. A machine whose activities are interfering with the Vision's brain functions!

Marvel UK, the Titans #55, Avengers and Hercules

Things are hotting up for both the Avengers and Olympus when the gang attempt to restore Hercules' lost memories and Hawkeye explains how he returned to Earth after the Kree-Skrull War and got himself a snazzy new costume that's bound to wow the fans.

Weirdly, my strongest memory of this one is that it features a chat between the Vision and Jarvis during sandwich preparation.

In another part of New York, Dr Faustus continues his campaign to drive Captain America mad with hallucinations of Bucky.

But can it be that the Star-Spangled psychiatric specimen has begun to see through the Freudian trickery?

Elsewhere, Triton's been captured by a film crew but soon breaks free, overwhelms them and escapes into the ocean.

Prince Namor has much on his plate when he discovers the Mad Thinker, Puppet Master and Egghead are planning to conquer America by using a device that's capable of shutting down electrical and mechanical systems.

As you'd expect, this leads to him teaming up with the Original Human Torch. But, then, the pair discover the "Torch" is actually a brainwashed Toro!

Finally, Satan gets Roxanne Simpson to abandon her protection of the Ghost Rider who subsequently loses much of his power but must still fight someone called Inferno!

  1. Triton breaks free of a film crew? Imagine if they had totally over powered him and he ended up in an Aquarium jumping out of the water to grab a fish? Flipper Triton!

Anyone else having a drink tomorrow night in honour of this week’s events? Not only the GOP, but Russell Brand too!

    1. Me and the Misus are going out for our monthly “date night.” For sure, we have been feeling quite relieved that Donald Trump and his groveling boot lickers, MAGA, and the Republicans in general have been thoroughly repudiated. Biggest repudiation in the history of the USA. Now the hard work begins . Alas the Dems are a bunch of professional losers… fingers crossed this new generation can advance an agenda.

  3. Matthew, I will hold back on that drink until Pete Hegseth is added to that list and impeached!

  6. And clueless Nigel Farage insisted the polls were wrong and the Republicans would win!

  7. About the comics up there, has anybody ever read a Planet of the Apes comic?
Y'know, I saw the movie and it was a classic, but it was weird how big of a deal it got to be back in the 70's. Sequels, action figures (hey kids, own your own Dr. Zauis action figure! Pull a cord and he will tell you that humans are dangerous....well, maybe he had a point...)
There was even a tv show, wasn't there?
Ah, the 70's. But at the end of the day, how far could you go with that premise? Yeah, apes take over, then what?
    Florida, maybe? I dunno.

  8. MP, I used to read Marvel UK's POTA comic every week. Admittedly, I read it for the backup strips, as the main, ape-based, strip was hardly ever interesting.

  9. Hardly ever interesting, Steve...? I take it the main exception there would the senses shattering Apeslayer run!

M.P., the only POTA film adaptations I recall being any good were Beneath... and Conquest..., because they were drawn by the great Alfredo Alcala.
I liked some of Marvel's own Apes stuff - the brains-in-fish-tanks and psychedrome stories - even though in retrospect it was all quite stupid. But Mike Ploog and Tom Sutton's artwork still (mostly) looks good to me.

Agree with Steve that the back-ups were the main reason to get the British weekly. Especially when it was reprinting Dauntless Don McGregor's 'Panthers Rage', enabling me to fill in the gaps between the imported issues of Jungle Action I'd managed to get hold of.

  10. Matthew, reading the news this morning it seems tech stocks are falling, so that's something else to drink to.
Charlie is probably right to be cautious - the Dumocrats do seem like the kind of people who are good at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory - but hopefully market madness will at least burst the AI bubble sooner rather than later.

  11. MP - Tangential to your inquiry I always felt POTA was conceptually like Kill.Raven and War of the Worlds: undeniable underdog good guys vs. indisputable evil in a post-apocalyptic world. And then you get the usual mix of sympathisers, collaborators, etc.

Hey, is KILLDUMPSTER back??? KD is that you???

    1. Yes, I always thought the Marvel POTA stuff had quite a bit in common with Killraven/WotW (even aside from Apeslayer).
'Magick Man's Last Gasp Purple Light Show' has to be the most McGregoresque story title in a 70s Marvel comic that Dauntless Don didn't actually write.

  12. MP, I generally enjoyed the apes stories in the POTA weekly unlike Steve and Sean (except Apeslayer which I hated).

Lots of fireworks last night in my locality for Guy Fawkes Night! According to Radio 4 the cellars below the Houses of Parliament are still ceremonially searched every year ahead of the State Opening to check for any explosives.

  13. Hello Fellow FOOMers… So did Marvel ever x-over any of the POTA and Killraven story lines in any way. It would have been kind of amusing to see the Apes serving as the Martians gophers?

  14. KILLDUMPSTER! Are you out there? Give us a shout out!

  15. OMG I would have loved to have seen a Martian tell one of those POTA Gorillas, “get me a cup of coffee you stupid little circus monkey!” and then toss him a banana!

  16. Last Christmas by Wham! enters the UK singles chart at #54.

Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You enters at #82.

Michael Jackson's Thriller reaches #5, its' highest ever UK chart position.

A few days ago I heard Thriller blaring out of a local coffee shop but I only caught the end part featuring Vincent Price's monologue so I watched the entire 14-minute video on YouTube - after 43 years it's still one of the greatest pop videos ever made!

    Darkness falls across the land
The midnight hour is close at hand...

  17. COLIN!!! 93.9’FM (LITE FM Chicago) started non-stop xmas tunes on Monday!!! It made broadcast news here fer cryin out loud!!!

Idk if chicago is especially gaga for Xmas or what but i immediately turned it on and Beyonce was singing something soothing

Last night driving to dinner I asked Missus Charlie to turn on 93.9. (I am a liberal so she was driving.). She said, “Sure if you want me to turn around NOW!”

Seems not all of us Chicago types are ready for xmas tunes yet!

COLIN can you get 93.9 FM streaming in the UK? I keep forgetting:(

    1. Excellent!!! The most nation-wide famous segment is some lady called Delilah. She always has some tear jerker interviews during xmas season each day with veterans families, folks who got sick or crippled, impoverished and turns it into a happier ending.
