I think we all get excited to discover what's on the Hit Parade in any December, as we home in on Christmas and that coveted Yuletide Number One spot.
If so, I think we'll all be thrilled to learn that December 1985 kicked off with Wham's I'm Your Man atop the UK singles chart. But the duo soon had to make way for Whitney Houston's Saving All My Love For You.
"That's all great," I hear you cry, "But no one came here for that. We all want to know what Britain's Christmas Number One was!"
And I can sensationally reveal it was none other than Merry Christmas Everyone by the Welsh Elvis himself Shakin' Stevens!
Sadly, things were not exactly unpredictable on the neighbouring album chart, with the month arriving with Now That's What I Call Music! 6 hogging the pinnacle before that was replaced by Now - The Christmas Album which was then replaced by Now That's What I Call Music! 6.
Should the intrigued reader wish to explore, further, the matters raised in this post, that year's UK Christmas singles chart can be found here.
While its associated album listings dwell within.
But what of Marvel UK? With the sale of Starburst to Visual Imagination, the imprint was now down to just two monthlies!
And for how much longer could they hold out?
I suspect the good Doctor's periodical can hold out for a substantial amount of time - especially as this month's offering bills itself as a Christmas Merchandise Special!
There's nothing I want more in my life than a merchandise special.
Within, we get an interview with Adric actor Matthew Waterhouse and with Doctor Who artist Andrew Skilleter, as well as the show's Production Secretary Sarah Lee.
We also find a review of Slipback. In all honesty, I have no idea what that is and, so, in the absence of any other evidence, I shall assume it's a novel.
Meanwhile, this month's comic strip is the final part of Frobisher's Tale.
I fear Captain Britain's mag may not prove to be as resilient as that of the good Doctor but only time will tell.
For now, I can tell you our hero's involved in a tale called Alarms and Excursions in which it seems he and Meggan visit ancient Peru to help Gatecrasher escape a predicament.
Next, the Black Knight has a three-page story reprinted from the days of 1979's Hulk Comic #1.
Then, Night-Raven's involved in Big Shot, also reprinted from 1979.
And, following that, he's involved in Midsummer Madness: Episode 3 which appears to be a new story.
But we finish the issue with the five-page offering Playgrounds and Parasites! Part 2 which, we'll all be delighted to know, stars the ever-popular Cherubim.

STEVE - will you concede the point that 2 years from now you will acknowledge that NOW THATS WHAT I CALL MUSIC 10 was #1 in December 1987 in the UK?
Just want to be sure.

Charlie, I remain unable to confidently predict the future.
Shakin' Stevens was number one that Christmas...?
Looking at that singles chart, obviously Sir Paul & the Frog Chorus were robbed, Steve.

I bought NOW The Christmas Album (on cassette) and I can reveal that most of the songs were from the period 1971 to 1984 plus Little Saint Nick (by the Beach Boys) from the '60s and Bing Crosby's White Christmas from 1942. White Christmas seemed ancient even though it was only 43 years old at the time and therefore more recent than any '70s Christmas song is now!
I was disappointed the album didn't include Boney M but c'est la vie!
WTH is that post above saying “I WANT TO DIE” about 327 times after I asked Steve to confirm NOW 10 would still be #1 in 1987 when he reviews 1987 again in 2 years?
I didnt even write in the 3rd person!
CH
Given the discussions about BBas context, how old would one have to be to appreciate the Stones / Who / Led Zeppelin? At least 60+?
CH
Omg… Dawn Wells from Gilligan’s Island died! Mary Ann over Ginger any day!

There are quite a few decent singles lurking across the top 100, but the lists suggests Pet Shop Boys ‘West End Girls’ peaked at number 4. I clearly remember this being number one, and so possibly we’re still dealing with multiple charts.
Steve, I suspect you may be correct with Captain Britain monthly. It doesn’t seem to be selling big numbers. Hopefully that will allow Alan Davis plenty of time to get ahead with Miracleman. By my calculations, they’re going to run out of material around issue 6…
DW
No worries DW - fortunately for Miracleman readers that guy Chuck Beckum was able to step in...
Btw Steve, 'Slipback' was a 6 part Dr Who serial broadcast on Radio 4 in 1985, with Colin Baker in an everyday story of time travelling folk. Sadly the Beeb missed the opportunity of a crossover with the Archers, and the Cybermen didn't get to wipe out Ambridge or anything.

My mother used to go see the Stones pre-stardom in the early 60s, when she was in her early teens. So about 75 in their case.
DW, West End Girls hit Number One in the UK in the week starting on January 5th, 1986.
Sean, thanks for the Slipback info.
Bands / singers like the Stones, Beatles, ABBA, Zeppelin, Bowie etc have universal appeal due to the quality of their music and their influence. My partner has grandchildren under 8 years old that listen on their own, to ABBA and the Beatles. Quality counts. I'm under 70 and I remember BB more as a sex symbol rather than an actress but I was aware of her .
Err what's with the "I want to die" message that's gone right over my head?
Anyhoo I hope you all have a wonderful new year and hope 2026 is a better year for the planet .
DW, West End Girls reached No.1 on Tuesday January 7th 1986 but I think the peak of No.4 means it had reached a peak of No.4 in THAT week when it was No.4 if that makes any sense.
