It's here!

It can't be stopped!

It's the feature that can never be hidden from and can never be hidden in.

Long after Mankind has left this planet, the animals of this world will gather at Stonehenge, once every year, to speak of that feature in hushed whispers deserving of those whose hushes are best left whispered.

You guessed it. It's the one in which the first person to comment below gets to decide today's subject for debate.

That subject could be almost anything. Therefore, feel free to make use of that comments section, and we shall see what shall develop.

PS. Am I the only person on Earth who thinks the word "develop" should have a letter "e" on the end of it?

My question is not meant to be the only question for today!

What do you want for Christmas or the holiday season?

Or, do you have any recommendations for that comic book lover in your life?

Or do you have any recommendations for that pre-1990s, in fact mostly 60s 70s and early 80s, music lover in your life?

Talk to Charlie! Give him some ideas!

Charlie -
I tend to find I pick up most of the books and stuff I want throughout the year, so I’ve come to enjoy things like booze and surprise gifts for Christmas.

Fro the comic book lover I’d personally recommend any of the smaller affordable Artisan editions of scans of original art from the 70s and 80s. There’s quite a few available now including a great Bolland Dredd edition.

For fans of older music, I’d recommend Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs-curated CD compilations. They’re themed and full of obscurities and oddities. They’re on the Ace label mainly…

I'll go for question 1.

What I’m most looking forward to at Christmas is my special Christmas cocktail. Baileys and Vienetta. Big glass of Baileys but, rather than dropping some ice, drop in a couple of chunks of Vienetta and let it melt.

Not to be confused with that popular dessert, Vienetta with Baileys poured over and served up in a bowl with a spoon. Same ingredients but one's a drink to enjoy in the evening over a board game and the other's a dessert to trough at the table after the turkey course. Different mindset, different experience.

I spotted today that there's a salted caramel Vienetta in the garage freezer. Will definitely be giving that a go in a cocktail.

Its been a manic year for me health wise, also for my other half and now her mum, so I'm hoping for a relaxing stress free break and a couple of alcohol free Guinness .

Comic related presents, I am hoping to get a couple of the Mighty Marvel Masterworks books ( Avengers vol 2 at least) these are the smaller sized paperback reprints of the 1960s classics and only around £14 each.

Record recommendations, I would suggest the 2022 Bowie Divine Symmetry box set his Hunky Dory period demos, originals and early stuff just as he became a star. Or the early 1960s American Garage Punk collection "Pushin to Hard" (Love, 13th Floor Elevators etc).

More than anything have a great family/friend time , that's all that really matters, well that and a wee Guinness .

Charlie, thanks for the topics.

I can't say there's anything I want for Christmas, although, the way things are going, an outbreak of peace on Earth might be nice.

As for ancient music, I've always felt the failure of Slade and the Jam to make an impact in America is one of the great injustices of all time. Therefore, I shall recommend Slade's Feel the Noize – Greatest Hits and the Jam's Greatest Hits albums as things to cram into one's Christmas stocking.

No pop culture presents for me anymore, however one of my friends has ordered that Bolland artists edition, and I look forward to browsing at some point. I’m visiting my son in England in January and he’s gotten us tickets for West Ham Crystal Palace, which will be a treat (for me, at least). I did get a bottle of Nyetimber for Christmas Day which is the English champagne (style) which is supposed to be really good (served at William and Kate’s wedding, if that counts for anything). I’ll know this time next week.

Just food and drink for me and for the second year running I'll be avoiding spirits in favour of low alcohol drinks in cans.

Can of Jack Daniels & Coca-Cola
Can of Captain Morgan & Pepsi
Can of Southern Comfort & lemonade
Can of Tesco gin & tonic
Can of 19 Crimes chardonnay wine
Can of Crumpton Oaks cider (it's the only cider available in individual cans rather than packs of four or six)

I’ve asked Santa for the (last?) Fantagraphics collection of Jack Davis’ EC Horror comics, FOUL PLAY. So hopefully I’ll be enjoying that one on Xmas Day.

The M&S Blood Orange margaritas are nice too.

Charlie asked Sants for a remote-controlled, battery-powered helicopter he could fly inside the house. And, behold, the gods of amazon have a Chinook version ;)

Charlie also asked Santa, who happens to be his soon-to-be wife’s brother who works for a liquor distributor, to find another bottle of Laidig Scotch that Santa brought Charlie last year.

This Scotch tastes and smells flippin weird and its own www site brags (!) that it has distinct tones of creosote (think railroad ties in the USA), car polish (as in Turtle Wax), and chloroseptic (think that green stuff mom sprayed down your throat as a kid for sore throats).

It very distinctly smells and tastes like all three! And yet after the first sip it grows on you immediately.

Go figure…

The aroma of kerosine (or paraffin in Britain) is one of the characteristics of aged Riesling. It only manifests in some varieties, usually after a decade or so in the bottle. An absolute treat when you stumble across one. Clare and Eden Valley, in South Australia, make really good examples, and they’ve used stelvin caps (screw caps) rather than cork, which tends to extend their life in the bottle.

I would ask for a bottle of Black Velvet, but I already got that covered.

There's not really much that I want for Christmas, other than an outbreak worldwide of logic, compassion, common sense and mutual respect. Oh, and just maybe one of Fantagraphic's Don Rosa or Carl Barks duck collection volumes...
Recommendations? For a pop culture fan, I'd offer up any of Time/Life's cd music compilations. Their series from the 60's through the 80's are quite comprehensive, loaded with good tracks, and are generally well mastered.
