Avengers #4 - Captain America Lives again, video review.

Avengers #4, Captain America lives again
There are many things in life that people were never meant to do. I've always instinctively known that I was never meant to appear on television.

Fortunately for the world, despite having once been offered the chance to be interviewed by Sophie Aldred, I've determinedly honoured that commitment to anonymity.

However, even I'm not oblivious to the existence of that terrible instrument of terror that men call YouTube. Verily it be filled with people giving their thoughts on all things known to man.

Therefore, in my never-ending quest to find new things to do, I've decided to review this comic via the medium of video, which is either me flinging the gauntlet down to other comics bloggers to enter a whole new field of self-expression as well, or it's just a man putting on a silly hat.

Whichever it is, here's my epic video review:

What, no pictures of the actual comic? What a swizz! And why is your hair flesh-coloured? I want my money back!

It's too late, Kid. I've already spent your money on a new hat.

Steve, you look so YOUNG!

John, that's the effect you get when you make sure to put a 100 watt bulb behind the webcam, to white-out all wrinkles.

JP, believe it or not, I'm only 25 in that avatar photo. When I was 18, I was told I looked about 40. By the time I was 40, I looked pretty much the same as I did at 18, thus giving the impression I hadn't aged. It's caught up with me now 'though - on a good day I look about 45. (But you should see the portrait in my attic.)

It's a ballsy move, Steve. I respect you, but I don't think your Haberdasher does. mp

Kid, if you stood next to me you'd look like a mere infant!
Even SANTA CLAUS looks young compared to me!

Do you realise that I'm NEVER going to be able to resd Av's #4 again without remembering everything you've said?
I think you've TRAUMATIZED me!
I used to BELIEVE that comic!
I thought it was all TRUE, every word!
Now you've gone and spoilt it for me!
Things will never be the same again! I'm going to get Captain America on to you! I KNOW he wants me to be his new partner!
But, wait! What would the Kid think?....

Steve, you've started the next big thing in blogging - Kid's already been on TV so he'll be a natural in front of the camera. Seriously though, it's a great idea and you should do more. Was the furry hat a tribute to Captain America spending 20 years stuck in an Arctic iceberg ? Kid, whoever said you looked 40 at 18 was just plain mean :)

John, I like to think I can see off Captain America. All I have to do is mention Bucky and he'll be off again, too busy shouting, "Bucky! Bucky!" to notice me sneaking up on him.

Colin, Thanks for the praise. The hat was partially my tribute to the snow that was starting to fall outside. Plus I read somewhere that if you do a Youtube video, you should wear a hat to make yourself more memorable.

Thanks to you too, Anonymous. :)

There are those that say life is not regretting the things you've done but the things you didn't do. I could've gone a wee bit longer not seeing that. I blink and in that brief moment of darkness, there is no relief. Just that hat dancing before my eyes! Oh the humanity! Bookie!?!

(This is a sad sight for a sober man).

Looking forward to the next one!!!

(The world is an imperfect place. Screws fall out all the time).

From out of the shadows...

I think I'll keep my "face made for radio" just that.

Nice chapeau, by the way!

Very clever Steve I liked the idea and the video review, plus good to see your face - as long as we don't get folk having to reply in person though ( I mean imagine having to see Kids fizzog every day!!)

You raised a lot of good points about the mad world of comics and the suspension of reality when reading comics - Caps constant whining about Bucky used to really annoy me seems his super soldier serum gave him super moaning powers as well (get over it man it was 70 years ago!!)

Thanks, Paul. Like a fool, I've decided there'll be other video reviews in the future but, right now, I have a cold, so, unless people want to see me sniffling and coughing my way through reviews, it's going to have to wait for a few days at least.

Steve W - the man, the myth, the You Tube star! Loved this video review, Steve. More please. Can we expect to see a whole range of exciting hats?

Thanks for the praise, cerebus. Sadly, I currently only own two hats. Whether more are acquired in the near-future hangs in the balance.

Gosh, how weird to see you in the flesh on the world wide web and looking so very young! Nice review and what a good idea to do a video. Of course, now I know you know how to use the webcam thingy there is no excuse acceptable for you not using it to talk to your old cyst....

Stan probably figured that he could get away with the "Captain America has been missing since 1945" premise because he assumed that (1) the readership turned over completely about every 5-7 years, and that (2) most comic book fans were 7-12 years old. (Both assumptions were probably justified at the time.) So a kid reading Avengers #4 in the early 1960's would not remember Cap's original run (which lasted until 1949) or his brief revival (in 1953).

I think there was a retcon in the 1970's that explained that the postwar Cap and Bucky were imposters. Actually, they were substitutes. The government had other heroes (Spirit of '76 and/or the Patriot) impersonate Cap so his disappearance would not cause a panic. (Apparently, they weren't worried about anyone missing those other two heroes.)

But if there was a substitute successfully impersonating Cap in the 1950's, then why did everyone in Avengers #4 say that Cap had been missing since 1945?

In the Captain America: Civil War movie, Cap almost has Crossbones subdued, but then the villain says the magic word, "Bucky," and Cap hesitates, which leads to a disaster.

Thanks for the info, Anon, it's nice to know that some things never change in the life of Steve Rogers.
