January 3rd, 1976 - Marvel UK, 50 years ago this week.

Hooray! It's a brand new year!

But have no fear. I'm still going to be serving up the same old rubbish.

Sadly, 1976 started badly for the UK, with its first week seeing hurricane-force winds of up to 105 mph killing 22 people across the country.

When it came to the music industry, there was no change atop the UK singles and LP charts, with Queen maintaining dominion over both, thanks to Bohemian Rhapsody and A Night at the Opera.

Marvel UK, Avengers #120 Man-Ape

I know for a fact that Conan's in this issue.

And I know for a fact that I don't have a clue what he's up to in it.

I do, however, have a clue what the Avengers are up to.

And that clue is the front cover.

Thanks to that, I know the malevolent Man-Ape is back, attacking the Avengers Mansion and determined to wage war on our favourite super-team!

Dr Strange, meanwhile, travels back in time, a couple of hundred years, in a bid to thwart the latest scheme of Baron Mordo.

And it all ties in with a man called Cagliostro!

Marvel UK, Titans #11, Sub-Mariner is threatened by big orange claw

It's the legendary Emergency 8p Issue, which I never had and was totally unaware of until I gained access to the internet.

I'm still not totally sure what the emergency is and why other Marvel UK mags are unaffected but it does mean
we get a non-glossy cover and a temporary price drop!

Inside, Magneto's still convinced the Inhuman royal family are mutants and is still determined to make them serve his cause.

Elsewhere, Subby's still trying to protect Atlantis from a giant sea-monster controlled by Warlord Krang who's got the Puppet Master to make him a useful maquette of it for that purpose.

Captain America's got a battle on his hands, trying to stop the Red Skull's giant Sleepers as they blunder across America, in a decidedly unwieldy but destructive fashion.

As they seem to have been doing for several months now, Hydra are hoping to set off a giant bomb and Nick Fury's trying to stop them.

And Captain Marvel's having some sort of meeting with Zo, the mystery being who gave him his thrilling new powers that I can't remember.

Marvel UK, Dracula Lives #63, Legion of Monsters

Dracula's out, causing mayhem, in the streets of England, and Shiela Whittier's male friend has decided its time to get over to Drac's gaff and stick a great big stake through him.

The Werewolf by Night is having to endure the return of the Hangman.

And the Man-Thing's having trouble with demons.

Mighty World of Marvel #170, Modok vs Hulk

I do always wonder why MODOK messes about with daft schemes when he's the inventor of the Cosmic Cube. Can't he just make another one and take over the world?

Regardless, like any sensible person, he's decided the best way to destroy the Hulk is to turn Betty Ross into a Gamma-mutated monster.

But, first, he's going to need a giant, robot, body.

As far as I'm aware Daredevil and the Black Panther team-up to finally bring down Starr Saxon.

While, when it comes to the Fantastic Four, Reed Richards is making yet another bid to cure the Thing.

But will he have time to do it before the Wizard shows up, armed to the teeth with his awesome Wonder Gloves?

Spider-Man Comics Weekly #151, the Spider-Slayer

As we can all see, Spider-Man's stuck with the latest incarnation of the Spider-Slayer!

In Iron Man's strip, the Crusher's finally found his way back to the surface from the centre of the Earth.

And, of course, he wants his revenge upon the armoured Avenger who sent him there.

In Thor's strip, Jane Foster is back but is, also, a captive of a zillionaire called Krask who wants to conduct a mind-swap operation that could be bad news for the thunder god.

Marvel UK, Planet of the Apes #63, Conquest

What's this? No sooner has Escape from the Planet of the Apes concluded than we're flung straight into Conquest?

When it comes to the Black Panther, he's still having trouble with Malice who attacks his palace, in a bid to liberate Venomm.

And Ka-Zar's still on the streets of New York and trying to bring justice to the drug pushers who inhabit it.

Marvel UK, the Super-Heroes #44, Giant-Man vs Human Top

"Once again, Giant- Man must face the horrifying Human Top!"

I think they may be slightly overplaying the Human Top's ability to cause a sense of terror in an observer.

And, speaking of not being able to inject much terror into the human heart, the X-Men defeat the Locust by making his own insects turn against him.

Meanwhile, the Scarecrow's up against a bunch of demons summoned by the Cult of Kalumai!

I have no doubt he shall prove to be victorious but I do believe this is to be his last-ever appearance in the comic.

The basis for a transposed Human Top, in the 1977 Superheroes card game?

The same old rubbish? Excellent, Steve - it's good to know that even in these troubled times there's still something we can rely on.

I believe 'Bo Rhap' was number all through January '76, til Abba knocked it off the top spot right at the end of the month. Which is a bit spooky really, considering the lyrics included the line "Mamma Mia let me go"...

Steve - you are a great way to start the new year! Thanks!

And As my brain, addled by too many Hugo Spritzes last night, read through your gorgeous post, I flashed back to my thinking that were I 10 years old I would be confused by a comic called Titans that didn’t feature the TEEN TITANS, and of course confuse a KRANG with a KANG.

Regarding MODOK, yep that COSMIC CUBE thing could probably be its own blog. Why would RED SKULL simply disintegrate CAP to atoms with it when he can swap their bodies and have folks and heroes chase down the Red Skull (Cap) and kill him?

Prowler has previously told the story of his first two comics purchased. Amazing Spider-Man 121 & 123 sometime in the summer of 1973. Prowler's third comic would be The Incredible Hulk 167 purchased the following month. Hulk 167 would have MODOK using his giant robot boot to crush Hulk. The same cover as The Mighty World Of Marvel albeit with an orange background. It would still be a few years before Prowler would buy A Night At The Opera... Prowler still has the comic and the album.

Prowler's pushing PUBLISH now... in 2026!!!

I did get the 8p "emergency issue" of The Titans but I can't remember why it was an emergency issue though I do recall that the next issue (#12) was the final one I had until after the Fantastic Four joined the comic in #27.

I've previously mentioned the Holocene Calendar which proposes updating our rather silly current calendar based on the "birth" of Jesus by adding 10,000 years to create a new calendar beginning roughly at the dawn of human civilisation and I approve of this idea so happy new year 12026 to all SDC readers!

McSCOTTY said...

Steve, the "emergency" at the time was due to a printers strike in the UK. I'm not sure why the other Marvel comics were unaffected but I remember a few UK comics ( DC Thomson etc) weren't published that week

McSCOTTY said...

Sorry, it was IPC comics that were delayed ( I think DCT had their own printing presses).

McSCOTTY said...

I just checked my back issues of Titans ( a tiny selection of them) and #12 was also an emergency issue.

That makes sense, Paul, as DC Thompson were notorious for refusing to allow their workers to be unionised.

This year is, of course, the 250th anniversary of America's declaration of independence so happy birthday to all our friends in the USA - and Mariah Carey's ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU is currently enjoying a record-breaking 22nd week at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 so America's anniversary year begins with a titanic tune at the top.

Charlie is wondering why Titans is being published in landscape mode vs. the others in portrait mode given they are all reprints?

Anonymous said...

Smce when was SCARECROW a good guy? Is Charlie losing his mind? and anyone know when that story was originally published with him and GIANT MAN? 1964?

STEVE - Charlie needs financial advice! He was going to wager all his retirement savings that SHEFFIELD UNITED will emerge victorious over OXFORD on Sunday. This seems a sure thing? How could anything go wrong? Would you agree?

Btw… were you a United or Wednesday supporter? Charlie forgets (a lot).

Colin - the world owes you big time for those xmas updates ! Charlie’s got to assume that even TAYLOR SWIFT is getting a bit concerned about MARIAH’s spectacular run at #1.

All - the wikipedia on this song is a pop-culture-statistics treasure-trove of trivia!
It’s earned $100 MM in royalties since 1994. And as Colin dutifully notes, it has this annual phenomenal climb up the charts at xmas. It’s like a perpetual motion machine!

Also it did have the record for taking the longest time to reach #1 after release of 25 and 26 years (uk and usa 1994 - 2020) until, presumably, KATE BUSH took 37 years with RUNNING UP THAT HILL a few years ago (1985 -2022).

Charlie, I would not recommend betting a single penny on Sheffield United beating anyone, this season.

When it comes to the Blades and the Owls, I am strictly neutral.

I think we just have to view The Titans' landscape format as a daring experiment.

McScotty, thanks for the emergency issue info.

Sean, Phillip, Colin and Prowler, thanks for your comments too.

Colin Jones said...

Charlie, you forgot about Brenda Lee's ROCKIN' AROUND THE CHRISTMAS TREE which took a whopping 65 years to reach #1 in the USA from its' first release in 1958 until 2023.

The Titans wasn't the only landscape comic from Marvel UK - Spider-Man Comics Weekly and The Super-Heroes merged to form a new landscape weekly called Super Spider-Man & The Super-Heroes and the first issue went on sale on Saturday, February 14th 1976, just three days before my 10th birthday. But the landscape experiment didn't last long and it was all over by June 1977.

Prowler is a firm believer that nothing good ever happens at dawn. Is there an 8 or 8:30ish of civilization we could go with? Thanks... that would be great!!!

Prowler is pushing PUBLISH... NOW!!!

The Prowler said...

Back in the day, the early 70s, comics were 20 cents. Marvel followed DC's lead and soon comics were 25 cents! DC then moved to 30 cents and Marvel proudly proclaimed they were Still 25 Cents!!! Then they moved to 30. We went through the same charade at 35 cents. When DC went to 40, Marvel was Still 35 Cents!!! Did youse guys have any comics that say "Still 22 Pence!!!"? Or was it just us?

Pushing the ol' PUBLISH button now...

PROWLER , et al. charlie was probably 11 years old when DC went to $.25 for 52 pages and they had that slogan on the front cover that said “don’t take less, only $.25! “

It never made sense to me… maybe if it said “don’t take more!”? That’s the funny pages for ya!

Prowler, to my knowledge, no British comic ever boasted that it was, "Still," any price.

Colin Jones said...

SATURDAY NIGHT by the Bay City Rollers reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, dated January 3rd 1976 so today is the 50th anniversary! The song was the Rollers' only American #1 and never charted in the UK!

Prowler, British comics quietly increased their prices and hoped nobody noticed!

That is unbelievable!

I'm going "off topic" - if this isn't of interest, please ignore...

A podcast I've discovered ( based on Colin's Muppet Show tip), might interest some SDC members. So far, the 'Are You Being Served' episode's the only one I've listened to. I started Man About the House/Sally Thomsett, but fell asleep, in the early AM ( CO detector problems! ) "Distinct Nostalgia" is the podcast's title. Here's an episode that Charlie might find intriguing:

Prowler's thinking in light of recent events involving Mariah Carey, Kate Bush, et al, that perhaps it would be more accurate to say "hasn't charted in the UK to date"! Fickle ficklesters with their ever changing tastes in music...

Prowler's pushing PUBLISH... now....

Apologies, Charlie. John Lennon isn't the focus - it's Steve Strange (Visage)!
