July 28th, 1976 - Marvel UK, 50 years ago this week.

This week in 1976 gave the world a stark warning of the dangers of warm, undisturbed water in a large building when delegates attending an American Legion convention at the Bellevue-Stratford Hotel in Philadelphia began falling ill with a form of pneumonia.

This would come to be identified as the first outbreak of Legionnaires' disease and caused the deaths of 29 people.

In the UK, the Dangerous Wild Animals Act was passed and required the possession of a licence for those wishing to keep potentially perilous animals in captivity. This Act is, of course, often brought up as a potential explanation whenever people report spotting big black cats in the British countryside. The claim being that its introduction caused owners of such animals to release them into the wild in a bid to avoid the crackdown.

Mighty World of Marvel #200

It's excitement all round, as Marvel UK's flagship title hits the two-hundredth issue mark!

I'm fuzzy as to whether the Hulk's still in Canada but what I am certain of is that we now encounter Crackajack Jackson for the first time.

And that means we also encounter his son.

That's the one who's chained to another prisoner in a double act that's not going well, thanks to them both being violent and anti-social racists.

Still, not to worry. A weird space alien soon shows up and gives them super-strength to thank them for shooting it.

Meanwhile, a quartet of Avengers visit a farm but soon find themselves attacked by a bunch of cows who decide to turn into the Fantastic Four!

What is this madness and what can it all lead to?

Conan continues to battle a living statue made of pebbles. It seems unstoppable until he discovers it doesn't like having solvents thrown at it.

I do believe the Stuntman's in the process of falling out with a movie producer. Which could lead to trouble for Daredevil who's in Hollywood, looking to reunite with Karen Page.

And I believe the sensational Alex Harvey turns up, this week, for an interview about his life, times and - I would assume - comic books.

Marvel UK, Planet of the Apes #93

I have cause to think that Jason and Alexander have finally moved on from defending Abraham Lincoln's nostrils and may well now be confronted by the Demons of the Psychedrome!

Not that I can remember what they are.

Which is odd, as you'd think that demons of a psychedrome would lodge themselves well and truly in your memory.

But there's a shock for us The Reader because, from out of nowhere, the Son of Satan appears in this comic and heads straight towards The Gateway to Hell.

I would assume this is the tale of just how he came to be and of how he gained possession of his magical trident!

Following that, the Man-Thing's still having problems with that pesky dead clown who insists upon telling everyone his life story.

And, then, Ka-Zar continues to have issues with someone called Tomas who hunts to please his father but becomes furious when that selfsame father proclaims his brother Gregor to be the new chief.

Chief of what, I fail to recall but I shall assume it all means that murder is in the air.

But The Son of Satan isn't the only strip turning up from out of nowhere. Even more unexpectedly, the issue closes with a reprint of the first few pages of Marvel's original adaptation of the first Planet of the Apes movie!

Super Spider-Man with the Super-Heroes #181, the Molten Man

I remember this one. It's the one in which Spider-Man keeps trying to prevent the Molten Man from finding a cure for his condition - even though it's clearly in everyone's interests for the Molten Man to find a cure for his condition.

Elsewhere, Moon Knight battles the Conquer-Lord, on a giant chessboard!

Iron Man continues to have trouble with the Unicorn and Red Ghost.

Dr Strange, having freed Eternity from the clutches of Nightmare, gets the galactic galoot to recreate the Earth which he'd managed to destroy while dreaming.

And, somewhere far far away, Odin, possessed by Infinity, attacks Thor! Is it curtains for the long-suffering thunder god?

Marvel UK, The Titans #93, Fantastic Four on the Moon as the Sentry approaches

History's made when the FF do their best to make sure Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin become the first men on the moon - seemingly having forgotten that they themselves have already been to the moon and back on several occasions and have been to the Andromeda Galaxy and have Kurrgo's captured flying saucer on their roof, which would have got Neil and Buzz to their destination in record time.

Rather more terrestrially, the Sub-Mariner's on the hunt for the villain Destiny who, I suspect, has decided to run for the Presidency of the United States - and on a populist platform!

Also untrustworthy is the Supreme Hydra who's successfully disguised himself as a SHIELD agent and is quickly winning the trust of Nick Fury.

Captain America and the Black Panther continue to battle Baron Zemo in Wakanda but make the shocking discovery that he's not the real Zemo!

And, in the Ghost Rider's strip, we discover the shocking origin of the Witch-Woman! Readers will not be surprised to discover that Satanic rituals were involved.

I've pointed it out here before but it's odd that Spider-Man sees burnt footprints on a carpet and thinks of Molten Man. In MM's previous two appearances, in Ditko days, he's been metallic and shiny but not hot. In his last appearance, he's wearing clothes, smoking cigarettes and giving Spider-Man non-fatal bear hugs. He's had a power upgrade behind the scenes that Soider-Man is somehow aware of.

On a separate subject, Thing TeamUp is missing from SSMatSH this week. I can't remember whether this is permanent. There are still five strips in there as Moon Knight is still hanging around like a fart in an exam hall. As someone who read Spider-Man, Iron Man, Thor and Thing but skipped Doctor Strange, Moon Knight and (later) Invaders, my disappointment must have been huge.

Who is Hulk vibing on the cover? That pose seems iconic, but I can’t place it. Could it be a Kirby Superman pose on a cover of Superman or action Comics that I am thinking of?

Also it is Nice to see something that is green and powerful and potentially deadly besides the lettuce supply in the United States of America.

MP is indeed my evil twin brother. We were separated at birth in Gary when the Great White Buffalo carried MP off to Dakota.

Btw anyone out there have any methods, to include old wives tales, on how to deal with poison sumac? Charlie is slowly but surely being consumed alive!

And, though we did have four tornadoes around us a couple days ago, Sugar Grove is still alive and well! Though, with the poison sumac consuming my upper torso, I wished a tornado had wished me off to never never land or something, lol!

Google images of poison sumac infection ; feel sorry for Charlie. Please. 🙏

Have you been out hiking, Joe, in the great outdoors? Surely, that's not a backyard plant!

I googled images of poison sumac infections. Hope it clears up for you quickly Joe/Charlie. Me, I'd need my wrists and ankles tied to the bedposts to stop me scratching. I'd definitely get it checked out too, just in case.

Charlie was pulling weeds. I surveyed the entire area for poison ivy and felt confident. So no long sleeve no long pants they’ll thank God I did wear gloves.

I honestly wouldn’t know poison sumac if someone put it on my dinner plate. Especially because there are sumac trees that I grew up with along the beach in Gary, Indiana, which are perfectly harmless and black, walnut trees, native only to the United States, and the Dakotas, also have similarly shaped leaves.

12 days in and its like The party is just getting started!

Charlie, I googled poison sumac and the rash looks awful so best wishes for a speedy recovery!

How could Dracula be absent from a comic that bore his name in the title?? Under the Trades Descriptions Act 1968 it became illegal to make false claims about a product so surely selling a comic called Planet Of The Apes & Dracula Lives which didn"t feature Dracula was a false claim, wasn't it?

So now both MWOM and POTA & DL had four strips each week which was too many as it meant each strip consisted of only seven pages! The traditional portrait-format weeklies should have been limited to only THREE strips each week and I'd have ditched Daredevil from MWOM with apologies to Phillip as I know he's a DD fan!

Charlie- condolences on your afflliction with poison sumac! It can really mess you up. I picked it up years ago while helping my cousin clear weeds in her backyard. Much worse than poison ivy (and I know ivy, been getting that misery since I was a kid). Had big blisters; miserable. And that was the weekend my wife and I went to see Duran Duran in concert- spent the evening with a bandaged seeping arm, but enjoyed the show. ..
Hope your bout eases up quickly!

I remember the original movie adaption being reprinted in POTA, mainly because the art dropped some of the gray-scale texture, they only reprinted a few pages each week, and it seemed a bit of a rip-off given the stories had featured only the year (or so) before. I agree with Colin, that 4 stories in a standard portrait comic (MWOM not Titans) meant each feature was too short. I was purchasing MWOM sporadically, and always seemed to get a Hulk story in which there was no Hulk.

I dont recognise the inspiration for this week’s MWOM cover, but the Hulk’s perspective seems out of sync with the others. on the Hulk. As it is, it suggests the Hulk is shorter than Captain America. Anti-Steranko!

Ignore the superfluous ‘on the Hulk’.

Charlie, I too wish you a full recovery. I'm definitely not going to Google what it looks like, as I suspect it's a thing I'm better off not seeing.

Joe - Are the Hulk's outspread fingers reminiscent of Dr.Strange (& Spidey), about 3 months ago, on SSMwtSH # 161?

https://www.comics.org/issue/536498/cover/4/

Probably not!

Good luck recovering from Poisoned Sumac. It sounds like a cross between a Batman villainess, and OMAC! Maybe some calamine lotion, if they still sell it, might cool the irritation. But don't take my advice - calamine lotion could exacerbate things!

Colin - No offence taken about you benching Daredevil. He didn't get really good until Tom Palmer joined Colan!

I no longer own a TV, a CD player or a DVD player after sending them all to recycling this morning and it feels cathartic!

Colin - A tragic end, for your glorious Trinitron! Currys accepts old electrical goods ( items too large for supermarket recycling bins) - avoiding a trail to the (often not) local recycling point.

Colin Jones said...

Phillip, I paid £23 for the council to come and collect my electrical goods. I was told to put them outside by 7am but I put them out at 6am and they were collected only 20 minutes later!!

By the way, my TV wasn't a Trinitron, it was a Technika - my previous TV was a Trinitron though.

Colin - To me, one of the biggest problems is old, broken umbrellas. The supermarket bins ought to take those, too!

Has anyone heard of Ella Langley? 15 weeks at Billboard #1. I kind of miss the mono-ish culture we had pre-internet. Sort of.

You gents raise a good point! Why doesn’t DC have a Poison Oak and Poison Sumac as villainesses to pal around with Poison Ivy??? Sumac even sounds cool!!!

They could even add Pokeweed and other vile flora and create a gang to challenge JSa or JLA or LegionSH!

Imagine Adam West and Burt Ward encountering them on Batman 1966! The kookiness and campiness of those two scratching! Oh my!

Well boys, like Malcom MCCLAREN said on BUFFALO GIRLS, “All this scratchin’ is making me itch!” A little Chicago house music!
