Get down the disco and cover yourself in glitter because, as recently mentioned by Colin Jones, this week in 1976 saw ABBA's Dancing Queen hit the Number One spot on the British singles chart. A move which cemented their position as the late 1970s' supreme musical force. Was there anyone not excited by this development?
Of course there wasn't!
Of course there wasn't!
The album chart, however, was still being dominated by the Beach Boys, thanks to their 20 Golden Greats album.
It may have been a good week for those two bands but it wasn't so great for the people of Yorkshire who saw drought measures introduced in their county.
But it may be too late because the foul, ferrous-flinging, fiend of infamy has kidnapped Sue Storm and Lady Dorma and is now holding them hostage!
In Ghost Rider, Johnny Blaze prepares for a demolition derby but someone called Dude Jensen - presumably no relation to Kid - has hired a killer to eliminate rival driver Red Thompson! Presumably no relation to Emma.
Elsewhere, the Red Skull's agents kidnap Sharon Carter, causing Cap to visit Exile Island, home, not surprisingly, to the Exiles. I am suspecting this is their first appearance in the pages of Marvel UK.
Speaking of geriatric Germans, Nick Fury infiltrates Hydra Island but is captured after discovering their leader is none other than his old World War Two adversary Baron Strucker!
And the Sub-Mariner returns to Atlantis - only to find his people worshipping someone called Naga and rejecting their prince as their rightful ruler.
And it's all the fault, I'm assuming, of the Serpent Crown!
I spot a cover by Happy Herb Trimpe.
It does strike me that having your eyeballs on stalks may do wonders for your image if you're trying to look disturbing but I can't help feeling it's a serious disadvantage in an actual fist-fight, making it far too easy for your foe to do you a mischief.
Elsewhere, Ka-Zar finds himself confronted by the Devil-God of Sylitha! although I suspect it may just be its cult of human sacrifice he has to contend with.
Deep in the Everglades, after a clash with rapidly ageing conquistadors, the Man-Thing finds a village built around the legendary Fountain of Youth.
And in the latest instalment of Marvel's adaptation of the first Planet of the Apes movie, Taylor finds himself Captive of Hate! Not to mention being a captive of Zira who starts to suspect he may have more smarts than the average human.
It's another classic issue, as the Inhumans get attacked by the Mandroids and then Triton shows up.
But, before that, the Hulk accidentally defeats Warlord Kaa when the setting sun and floodlights destroy the villain's shadow-based powers.
But what's this? The tale ends with Colonel Armbruster shooting Bruce Banner dead!?!
It's wolf-based action for Conan when a woman called Lupalina agrees to help him rescue Stefanya from Torkal Moh.
It's wolf-based action for Conan when a woman called Lupalina agrees to help him rescue Stefanya from Torkal Moh.
And Daredevil's still in Hollywood and trying to get to the heart of just which member of a TV show's crew is the murderous Brother Brimstone.
Drama hits ever-new heights, when not only does Harry Osborn kidnap Flash, MJ and Aunt May, he also straps a time-bomb to one of them and challenges Spider-Man to work out which one most needs rescuing!
But what's this? A brand new strip for us to peruse?
Sadly, it's just The Invaders in which Captain America, Bucky, the original Human Torch, Toro and Sub-Mariner must join forces to thwart the aims of Nazis everywhere.
And there's trouble for Tony Stark when he's replaced by an evil Life Model Decoy. An act that leaves Stark penniless, before Madame Masque shows up and captures him!
In the Savage Land, the human race is saved because the Thing and Ka-Zar defeat the man called Volcanus and his plan to devastatingly exploit the area's volcanic energy.
But it looks like it's game over for Thor, as Hela catches up with him and forces him to surrender to prevent her from ageing a bunch of firefighters to death!

“Sadly it’s just the Invaders.”???
Me thinks your fountain pen is full of foolhardy flatulence, fellow!
I believe Steve might be flexing our familial femurs with that one :)
b.t.
This site is being flooded with frivolous flapdoodle! Fini!
What was the big deal with putting nipples on Conan and Kazar?
Ya know…. There is actually a bit of drama in Triton coming out of the manhole. IIRC it is the splash page or so of Avengers 94 by Neal Adams. The best $.20 one could have spent that year! The best $.25 was Avengers 93 :)

Dancing Queen leapt from #16 to #1 in a single week!
anon-
I don't know why any guy has nipples.
I didn't ask for these.
They really look weird on the Hulk,
M.P.
Dancing Queen also launched ABBA's new-look logo displaying the letter B back-to-back which has become iconic.
Joe/Charlie, Ella Langley's Choosin' Texas has reached #1 on the UK singles chart!
Dolly Parton's Jolene has risen to #6 which is one place higher than the song's original UK chart position in 1976. Islands In The Stream is at #9 and 9 To 5 is at #5 which is way better than 1981 when it failed to make the UK Top 40 at all.
Well, Colin it looks like nobody wants to come out and play today. What do you want to do?
We can go to the playground by the fire station, or climb the sand dunes, or build a fort in the back alley.
And it sucks our moms wont let us ride our bikes on the beach!
Or, we can go check out the spinner racks at the little grocery store and see if there are any new Comics! I am hoping we find Avengers 93 finally!
Your choice!
Oh! Are you wearing short pants or long pants?
Regards!

Joe
We could take a trip to Lake America, Joe : )
We could!!! But it’s a bit of a long ride for two kids on stingrays? :). Where do you grow up? Maybe there’s something to do around there?
Joe, I was born in the bustling metropolis of North London but from aged two I grew up in a tiny village in South Wales where there wasn't much to do so it's a good thing I discovered Marvel comics!
As regards 1976's comics, Marvel UK reprinted a lot of the memorable ones (Warlock, the Champions, Iron Fist, Man-Thing, etc, etc) in 1980/(?)81. So, it's a double-vision kind of year, for me!
Colin - Al McKenzie (editor of Savage Action, Rampage Monthly, Conan & Dr.Who Monthly) dropped in, on Crivens' comments! He responded to my mentioning Savage Action!
Paul - Why isn't Captain America # 215's cover on your Gil Kane tribute? ; )
Phillip
Yes, I saw those comments, Phillip - what a coup!
Phillip: Cap America #215 wasn't on my Gil Kane top 10 list as I couldn't find my copy that's hiding somewhere in the loft, but it was on my list. Baring the odd exception, I try to only use comics that I physically own on my blog. To be honest there are a few Kane covers I missed that in hindsight I should have been included .
North London, Colin? You'll be wanting Arsenal to win against Chelsea today then.
And be suitably outraged by the disallowed goal yesterday that let Spurs finally get a point (;

Paul - Your Cap Marvell & Blackbolt certainly gets my vote. Not for the cover, necessarily, but it was such an interesting combo. My brother got that comic, in the States (so, some memories attached, too! )
Phillip
Joe - Does 'Maxwell's Silver Hammer' mean anything to you?
Phillip
Paul, its inevitable you'll have missed some worthwhile covers, given how many Gil Kane actually did back in the day. You came up with a pretty good cross-section of his work though A bit surprising there were no Conans maybe, but it was great to see you included a couple of his Superman covers. Love his work on the inside of that Superman Special #1 too.
Fwiw one of my favourite Gil covers was Captain Marvel #37. Although I guess thats as much for Klaus Janson's inking as anything.

Phillip! Good morning from Chicagoland! Nothing in particular besides the McCartney song on Abbey Road that apparently John and perhaps the other two really did not like lol.
Joe - There's a UK character, called 'Nightraven', whose adventures were narrated by 'Maxwell Stockbridge' ( Alan McKenzie being the writer's real name.) Guessing at the pen name's origins ( I first speculated on famous editor, Maxwell Perkins) led to a Dr.Who character, named Maxwell Edison, which - in turn led to 'Maxwell's Silver Hammer' ! That's the Reader's Digest version. The real thing is even more complicated!
Phillip
Second dash after 'in turn' is missing. But it's probably gibberish anyway!
Phillip
Wow dude! Never knew that! Dr Who will always be enigmatic to many of us here, too.
My son’s teacher around 2010 swore he and his wife were the motivation for Desmond and Mollie written about by Paul in “Obla De obla da” also on Abbey Road. Teacher (from England) claimed they met Paul on a train and he said “Im going to put you in a song one day.”
Charlie, are you aware that Wings were at number two in the British singles chart this week in '76?
I do feel like with Steve - and Colin - getting excited about Abba being number one it's only right that we should also hear from you about Sir Paul's 'granny music' (;
-sean
I always thought Desmond Decker, the reggae artist was the inspiration for the male character in "Obla de Obla da" not sure about Molly. Didn't MC Cartney sing one of the lines wrong ie Desmond putting on his l to "lovely face" instead of Molly. I'm not a massive MC Cartney fan, but I do like that song,v the version by Marmalade in the UK ( number 1) was the first single I ever bought
I remember singing Obla De obla da, as part of the school choir!
