Those of us who were fans of harrowing World War Two drama series Allo Allo will remember the vital life-or-death storyline that involved The Fallen Madonna With The Big Boobies. How we gasped as Herr Flick of the Gestapo tried to track down that painting.
But, of course, for comics fans there was a far more important Madonna than even her.
And that was the Celestial Madonna.
In yet another feat of masochistic madness, within the next few days Steve Does Comics is to launch a project that dwarfs even its review of the Kree/Skrull War, and begin the demanding process of reviewing every instalment of the Avengers epic that gave us the origin of the Vision, Agatha Harkness being abducted as possible breeding stock (!!!), and a woman with antennae marrying a talking tree.
In the meantime there's a bigger issue to be addressed.
All devoted Avengers readers'll know that at one point it was touch-and-go as to whether it'd be Mantis or Moondragon who'd nab the Celestial Madonna gig.
That's hardly surprising as they had much in common, most specifically a level of self-regard that'd make Brian Clough blush and a determination to cause ructions at every opportunity. So, the subject of our latest poll - to be found in the sidebar on this blog's starboard side - is; "If you were a talking tree, who would you rather marry; Mantis or Moondragon?"
Don't forget to vote. Remember, somewhere out there a randy tree may be depending on your answer.

One of the best storylines of 70's Avengerdom, along with the Avengers Defenders War. As for choosing between these two cosmically self regarding annoyances, speaking if I were a tree, I would go for the Scarlet Witch. Psychotic mass murderer in waiting.
Well, there's a lot of Marvel Heroines I'd go for first: Hellcat, Tigra, the Wasp, Scarlet Witch - honestly M & M would be close to the bottom.
But between the two, I guess I'd go with Moondragon. There was something about Mantis's costume that looked like it was made of old neckties. And I was always impressed with Moonie's ability to pull off the Yul Brenner look.
But honestly, these two were both pretty annoying. After a year or two, the tree would probably take itself willingly to the closest sawmill!
The first comics I started following was the Defenders back around 1985 or so after seeing a big pentagram and gargoyle on the cover. I do remember having a crush on Moondragon around that time, as did Cloud ... about the dullest transgendered hero you could imagine. So I have to cast my vote that way. But that was the period where there Defenders were, as a reader put it (more or less), a receptacle for washed up X-men.
This was indeed a great story. I'd pick Mantis over Moondragon. They may both be arrogant and annoying, but at least I wouldn't have to worry about Mantis messing with my head.
I blogged about Essential Avengers 6 last month so I'd go with Moondragon. As a little kid, I found her oddly attractive as she levitated above Daredevil's Xmas tree (not a euphemism). Her Marvel Team-Up with Spidey is one of my favourite Bronze Age comics.
Absolutely. Mantis Rocks. I loved the Mantis-Vision-Scarlet Witch
Love Triangle.
The Summer Defender/Avenger team up series were my Faves! I’m such a Boomer
