January 19th 1974 - Marvel UK, 50 years ago this week.

Would you like to teach the world to sing?

In perfect harmony?

And grow apple trees and honey bees?

And snow-white turtle doves?

So would I!

However, that honour was to be denied us, this week in 1974 because, while the New Seekers of Coca-Cola advert fame were at Number One on the UK singles chart, it wasn't with that song. Instead, it was with the track that they and everyone else knew as You Won't Find Another Fool Like Me.

Sadly, I can shed no light upon whether the recipient of that song ever did find another fool like them.

Over on the accompanying LP chart, Slade were similarly triumphant, climbing nine places to grab the Number One spot, with their latest platter that battered, the waxing we can only call Sladest.

Spider-Man Comics Weekly #49, Dr Octopus

It's time to blow up your balloons and hang out your bunting because a historic moment is upon us!

It's true! This was the first issue of SMCW I owned that possessed a glossy cover!

And what a cover it is, as Doc Ock doesn't manage to defeat just one Spider-Man, with his titanic tentacles. He's somehow defeating two of them at the same time!

Inside the book, our hero's out to find the cephalopodic crimelord, following the damage done to both Aunt May's health and her house. But, when he locates him, the wallcrawler might wish he hadn't because the villain uses a stolen super-weapon to make him lose his memory.

Thor and the Absorbing Man, meanwhile, are all set to resume the battle they've been waging for weeks. But, this time, in the halls of Asgard.

And it looks like it's going to make the morning papers, as reporter Harris Hobbs has blackmailed the thunder god into transporting him to the mystic realm in return for silence about his secret identity.

But is it even going to be Thor who defeats the copycat villain?

Or is it going to be Odin, who's currently engaging him in combat?

And can even the boss of the gods defeat a foe who can perfectly mimic his power and throw it right back at him?

But, hold on. We're not done with excitement yet. I do believe the inside back cover of each of this week's comics features a blank page upon which we may draw our design for a hero or heel of our creation. It's all part of an art competition, the first prize for which is a colour television.

For more information about that competition and the vital role I played in it, you can click this link here.

The Avengers #18, Power Man

The quarrelsome quartet find themselves fighting a foe who's too strong to stop, as the Enchantress uses the machine, with which Mr Zemo created Wonder Man, to turn one of Mr Zemo's minions into Power Man.

As if that weren't bad enough, the City Council's so unimpressed by the team's recent performance level that it orders them to disband!

But what's Dr Strange up to in this issue?

If he's any sense he's probably hiding from Power Man. However, he's probably not. He's probably too busy trying to stop some supernatural menace or other.

The Mighty World of Marvel #68, Hulk vs the Super-Humanoid

And just look at that. This is the first glossy-covered issue of MWOM I ever owned.

Sadly, its frontage can't be claimed to be as impressive as the Spider-Man one, what with it being noticeably less well-drawn, less well-conceived and displaying some truly egregious colouring decisions.

Fortunately, inside the book, things are far more impressive, as Stan Lee and Herb Trimpe give us a tale in which the Hulk's trapped inside a load of rubber while the Leader moves his Giant Humanoid into Thunderbolt Ross's missile base in a plucky bid to launch a nuclear holocaust.

Meanwhile, in their tale, the Fantastic Four tell the Avengers to butt out while they tackle the Mole Man who's up to his old game of kidnapping large chunks of cities.

However, Sue's injured in the chaos - and only one man can save her.

That man is her own father who's not only a world-class surgeon but, also, an escaped convict. Will he do the right thing and sacrifice his freedom to save her?

Does MWOM # 68 start Hulk's trend for appearing low Earth-orbit - e.g. the following:

Hulk # 125 - Hulk & Absorbing Man

Hulk # 137 - Hulk & Abomination

Hulk # 174 - Hulk & Cobalt Man

in low Earth-orbit!

'Tales From Topographic Oceans' not the number one album anymore, Steve? Oh well, never mind.

Dr Strange is up against TWO supernatural menaces this week - Baron Mordo and the dread Dormammu! Yes, it's a bit of a gear shift for the Ditko-era Doc, as the series leaves behind the done-in-ones and begins the extended arc that will eventually introduce Eternity.

Why is the Hulk orange on that MWOM cover? Anyone got an explanation?

It look like one of the colour plates (red?) was missed because Hulk's trousers are blue rather than purple. The corner character icon (Hulk) is also discoloured, but was correct for the previous, and will be on subsequent, issues. Perhaps the glossy cover stock threw them in some way (but then why was last issue fine?). That corner Hulk icon (I'm sure this has a proper name) was a favourite of young DW because, having missed these at the time, if I found a copy at a jumble sale, it signified it was an older (and no doubt far more valuable) issue.

As I mentioned last week, I saw Lyn Paul (of the New Seekers) perform 'You wont find another fool like me' live, a few years later, at a holiday camp. I recall she belted it out with gusto.

On second thoughts, there's plenty of red on the cover and so perhaps the it was simply a case of someone not realising Hulk is green with purple trousers...

The Hulk was in space (or low Earth orbit) and those pesky cosmic rays briefly turned him red!
They made his pants turn blue too.
I'll accept my no-prize now.

DW, that was my immediate reaction to the MWOM cover too, that a colour plate must have been left out. It just looks so off. Then I realized that couldn't be the case, as there is actually a fair bit of green reproduced. Just not on the Hulk...

Really, I was putting the question out there for more of a no-prize type explanation. So far M.P. seems to be the only taker so I guess he should probably get one. If only by default.
C'mon M.P., cosmic rays? Surely you can do better than that?

Sean - In M.P.'s defence, the Hulk's turned orange/brown, similar to the Thing, after exposure to cosmic rays!

Phillip

Wow - I missed M.P.'s second point, about the Hulk's trousers turning the same colour as the Thing's trunks! The theory's almost iron-clad!!!

Phillip

Maybe, Phillip, but cosmic rays are a bit of a standard explanation. I would at least have hoped for an added Donald Trump joke from M.P.

-sean

Sean - Hmm, possibly! The Hulk could be wearing fake tan - a la Trump - as (zooming in), around the Hulk's eyes, there's some white - in areas where fake tan hasn't been applied. Still no explanation for the blue trousers, though!

According to Wikipedia SLADEST was a greatest hits album and it was Slade's penultimate No.1 album.

Hey, you guys remember the Brute? No, not the Brute from Atlas/Seaboard that Steve has posted a cover of up there.
Who occasionally ate people...(what was the deal with cannibalism over there at Atlas anyway? Maybe the F.B.I shoulda checked out Chip Goodman)
No, the Brute from Marvel Comics, Reed Richards from Counter-Earth. Cosmic rays didn't give this particular Reed stretchy powers, instead they turned him big, purple and mean.
He coulda tried out for the defensive line of the Minnesota Vikings, but most years they're not all that scary or mean, apparently. So instead he went on a rampage and gave Warlock a hard time for a while.
Which goes to show ya, cosmic rays are unpredictable. I seem to remember them making the Hulk smarter once. Or stupider. I forget.
And they're actually a real thing! Even with the same name.
High-energy particles from the sun.
That's about as much as I could dope out, because I am NOT a science guy.

Also, it's well established that the Hulk's pants are purple due to the effect of Gamma radiation on cotton fibers. How many times I gotta say this...
It's not like Bruce Banner gets up in the morning and decides to dress like Prince.

M.P. - Yes, I remember the Brute, within the pages of MWOM # 311 onwards:

https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Mighty_World_of_Marvel_Vol_1_311

As a kid, the Brute impressed me, being stronger than the Thing - Hulk-level strength, I thought, at the time! The Brute also has a bit of a "hump" on his back, which isn't pretty (see 4th page - "And What the Brute wants, he gets!"):

https://tombrevoort.com/2018/09/30/picking-up-where-things-left-off-yesterday-this/

For a real cannibal, though, look at "Billy" (the creature Hulk's punching, on this cover!):

https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Mighty_World_of_Marvel_Vol_1_299

"Billy" was a nasty piece of work!

Phil-
Good Lord!
I checked out your link. I think I remember reading that particular Hulk story before. If I did, it was probably a reprint. Yikes. It's pretty dark!
Even for a Hulk story.
I didn't mean to drag the comment thread into such a dark subject!
Don't pay any attention to me, I've been distracted. As I type this, South Dakota is 15 F below and falling. We are truly in Ymir's icy grip.
But hope springs eternal, and a warm front is on the way. I hope Charlie is staying warm.
And you too Phil!

Thanks M.P.!

With heating bill costs, fleeing S Dakota & visiting a southern US state, over January, might balance out even!

Then again, according to the BBC this morning, even Florida's been hit by winter weather. Hopefully, Ragnarok isn't pending!

Over here, our weather's warming up from tomorrow onwards - supposedly - but with gale-force winds! My washing & drying day's presented itself to me!

Some of you Probably remember when Charlie accidentally posted under his daughters Google account. The more attentive ones here quickly observed that it probably wasn’t the real Charlie given the blue eyes, long blonde hair hair, etc., lol! Anyhow, Rachel is now 28 and today is the Rachel’s baby shower! She was married last summer. Boy oh boy, does Charlie feel old… I’m going to be a grandpa around 1 April. I am prayerful that there’s another opportunity for someone in my hereditary line to perhaps, appreciate, comic books, and I can leave them my collection!

Congratulations, Charlie, to both you and Rachel.

Cracking news Charlie. Let us all know how it goes.

Congratulations to all concerned, Charlie.

MP, I do indeed remember Marvel's Brute. I was a big devotee of the original Adam Warlock stories and everything from them has lodged itself securely in my brain. Possibly to a greater degree than it should have.

Congrats Charlie and family. They do sell West Ham clothes for babies. Just saying ;-)
